Teachers are not mere instructors but also learners. They keep learning throughout their professional journey. However, not all instructors want to remain teachers for their whole lives. Like every other professional, most teachers also dream of reaching the climax of their careers. For instance, many might want to get to a point where they no longer have to teach but remain a prominent part of the education sector like a headmaster or department head.

1. Experience outside the classroom 

Often teachers don't realize that there is a lot to explore outside the classroom. Taking up out-of-school roles is a good idea, mainly because they can teach you about students, societies, and communities. 

Teaching in classrooms for a few years is necessary to take a step ahead in your career. However, extracurricular involvement is also essential. Teachers should not miss out on any learning opportunity that will help them develop line management and leadership skills. If time is corporate, taking projects that one is passionate about can be a significant addition to teachers' professional development. 

If you are highly eager to join the senior management of the education industry, continuing your education and getting a terminal level degree is highly advantageous. For instance, it is best to have a Ph.D. to increase your chances of becoming a member of the education administration team. Not only is the degree valuable, but a phd in education administration salary is also overly competitive.  

2. Promotional exams 

Education sectors all around the globe conduct promotional exams for educators at least once or twice a year. These exams test teachers' skills and grade them according to their performance. 

Exams can be of different manners; written, verbal, or observational. Applicants who secure the highest rankings in these periodic exams can move up into higher positions. Such promotions also come with extra perks such as increased salaries, more vacation allowance, and flexible timings. 

Sitting for promotional exams is very common amongst educators. Many consider these exams an easy way to climb up the professional ladder even though the results' accuracy is debatable. 

3. Networking 

A well-researched and proven most effective method of securing top positions in your career is networking and lobbying. The better relationships you can maintain with your bosses and colleagues, the more you will be promoted to senior positions. 

Creating a supportive network is increasingly essential for teachers and professors. It helps them connect with like-minded people, learn a significant deal about their careers, and make better choices for their future. Networking is an excellent way to gain knowledge, advance your career, and build confidence. It is a convenient resource-sharing mechanism that can get you access to several job opportunities as well. 

To expand their network, it would be helpful if educational professionals attended conferences, workshops, participated in outside courses, and visited consultants. Use technology to your benefit as well. We live in a technologically evolved era with access to thousands of people at our fingertips. Social media has been highly beneficial for people looking to expand their network. Connecting with people via Facebook, Instagram, or any other digital platform is the new normal. Social media can also allow you to see what people believe, show interest in, and support, making melding easier for you. 

Teachers can also invite an influential member of their network to deliver a speech, teach something, or influence students for their benefit. Hence, making networking a win-win situation. 

4. Learn from others 

There is no better way to find progress than learning from others. It's surprising to see how much people surrounding you have to offer. There are two types of earning from others; direct and indirect. Explicit or direct learning is asking people to help and teach you about something. On the other hand, indirect knowledge comes mostly through observing others and trying to imitate them. Intentional observation is a powerful tool that can help you develop relevant leadership skills.

Keep in touch with people at your workplace. Find out what they do and if it interests you, figure out a way to work with them. You can start by voluntarily helping them out and then create an opportunity to work for yourself. 

Communicate with your bosses and leaders about leadership. Ask them about their struggles and the ups and downs of their roles. It will prepare you for your future position and give you a clear picture of all the hard work required. You will also be better able to reflect and think through your choices of proceeding to a specific position in your career. 

5. Promotions on merit 

Professional exams aren't the only way to judge a person's qualifications or commitments to their current role. Meritorious services also play a critical part in some instances. For example, a person who worked hard and put in a lot of dedication to their job deserves a promotional reward. 

As is mentioned above, these promotions do not require any exam. Educators purely base them on a candidate's achievement and hard work. Recommendations play a substantial role in helping you succeed on the career ladder. In reality, suggestions can make or break your professional journey. Excellent advice from your students and higher authorities is very effective in getting promotions. Similarly, harmful recommendations can significantly dismantle your image and reputation and can lower your professional growth chances.
