Difference between MD and MBBS?

BS/MD is a dual degree programme in Bachelors in Science and Doctorate in Medicine. And MBBS -Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery is a professional degree in medicine. BS/MD is a combination of graduate and post-graduate degree in medicine. It is the fastest growing programme for medical aspirants. One more question arise in many minds that which degree is equal to mbbs?

But the question is – Are these two courses holds the same weight? Is BS/MD equivalent to MBBS?

The answer is yes!

Both the programmes – BS/MD and MBBS are the professional degree courses for medical aspirants who would like to be a medical doctor in their respective country, and both are considered to be some of the most popular medical degrees online and on campus. The duration of BS/MD programme is 5.5 years which included 1.5 years of BS followed by 4 years of MD. Practical training is an ongoing process throughout BS/MD course.  Whereas, MBBS is a 6-year course which includes 5 years of academic training and 1 year of practical hospital internship.

Why BS/MD?

In India, students clearing 12^th examinations with PCB as their core subjects can opt for MBBS. Whereas, in other countries, high secondary education is not enough to persevere their medical career. The students must have a degree in Science (B.S) to purse further medical education. In other words, a 10+4 system is followed by the top medical universities for higher education in Medicine aboard.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has prescribed a minimum of 72 study modules to complete a degree in basic science (B.S). Emilio Institute of Medical Science prepare students to finish these modules in 10 -18 months.  

Once students graduate in B.S programme from our Bangalore Campus, we send them to Emilio Aguinaldo College of Medicine to complete 4-year M.D programme. This dual-degree programme of BS/MD is equivalent to MBBS in India.
